What even is Face Serum?
Whether you're a skincare aficionado or just getting started, you may find yourself confused on what Face Serum actually is, and just what effect it's having on your skin. You may own multiple serums and, due to the vague packaging, still, find yourself unsure as to when and how to properly apply the product. Here is my quick breakdown to face serums: what they are, how they should be used, and all the benefits they bring.
What is it?
Essentially, face serum is a product that you apply after cleansing but before moisturising, making it the 'main course' in your daily skincare routine. Serums are smooth, oily substance that has a lipid-soluble base, allowing the ingredients to go deeper inside your skin than a moisturiser. These smaller molecules are jam-packed with a high concentration of ingredients, making them great for targeting specific skincare conditions as well as hydrating your pores.
A common misconception is that serum is also a moisturiser. While it's true serums are filled with ingredients to help maintain moisture, the liquid travels too deep and will not stop the top layer of your face from feeling dry. Hence, why it's important to use a moisturising cream after applying your serum in order to create a 'barrier' and keep all that goodness in.
How do I use it?
It couldn't be easier. After cleansing your skin, apply a small amount of serum to your finger (roughly pea-size) and rub the liquid into your face and neck.
Wait a couple of minutes before applying your moisturiser, in order to give the serum time to soak in and do its thing, and boom, that's you.
Your serum should instruct on the bottle how often it should be applied, but generally, once a day is a safe bet.
What are the benefits?
Different serums will have different effects but most of them will provide you with similar benefits!
As mentioned previously, serums are a great way to hydrate your skin, with the smaller molecules being easy for the face to absorb. Not only that, but serums also help moisturiser soak deeper into your skin as well, letting your skin feel smoother for longer.
Face serum is an excellent collagen booster. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and helps fight signs of ageing. As you get older the collagen in your body begins to deteriorate, leading to wrinkles and weaker skin. Using a face serum is a great way to strengthen collagen and keep your face looking youthful and radiant.
Serums are normally rich in antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E. These ingredients, and others, act as a natural protection for your skin against the harsh elements of daily living, such as sun damage and air pollution.
Certain serums are great for eye protection, whether it's puffiness, dark circles, or just general signs of ageing. The skin around your eyes is much thinner than the skin around the rest of your body, and the constant blinking and squinting, mean your eyes are likely the first area to show signs of ageing. Most serums will improve the eyes around your skin and offer protection, but if you're looking for something specific, there are several serums that target eyes specifically for fast, efficient results.
